2020 Oscars Recap

Image
For movie buffs everywhere, Oscar season is one of the most exciting times of the year. You get to watch as many of the contenders as you can, debate with your friends about who the winner should be, and talk about how wrong the awards got it afterwards. All went according to plan… except for one aspect. People are… happy with the results? I, for one, was certainly thrilled with the winners. Let’s discuss! I’ll start by talking about the monumental accomplishment of Bong Joon Ho and Parasite . Of the best picture nominees that I watched, Parasite was most definitely my favorite of the bunch. It was suspenseful, funny, and artfully directed. On top of that, the entire cast put in an excellent performance. With that being said, I was both stunned and overjoyed to see the Korean film clean up the competition! The film winning best international film was a stone-cold lock. The other categories, however, not so much. I certainly hoped it would win some of the top awards, bu

Weekend Basketball Update: 76ers vs. Lakers and Kobe Bryant

Image
For my next post, I wanted to do some sports writing by covering the phenomenal game on Saturday, January 25 th between the Sixers and the Lakers. Before I was able to sit down and write, the entire sports and worldwide culture was turned on its head with the tragic passing of Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna. I’m going to call and audible and write about both in a weekend basketball update. Going into Saturday’s game, I was not feeling confident about the Sixers’ chances. Coming off of a tough loss against Toronto, the Sixers now had to host LeBron, Anthony Davis, and Co. to the Wells Fargo Center while still being without starters Joel Embiid and Josh Richardson. In order to stand a chance against one of the league’s hottest teams, the remaining starters would need to step up in a huge way. They stepped up and then some. Ben Simmons came to play with one of his best performances on the season by going 12/15 for 28 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 steals. He and

Why the Movie Theater Experience is Worth It

Image
With Oscar season under way, I’m going to be watching as many as the nominated movies that I can in preparation. Preferably, I will be watching them in the movie theater. Many people I know prefer watching movies at home, but I certainly do not agree with that. I am a big proponent of the home theater and having a great experience at home, but the movie theater experience is one that can’t be beat. Even though ticket prices seem to higher every year, I maintain that the experience is well worth it. Here are some of the top reasons why. Ultimate Audio and Visual Experience No matter how amazing your TV and speakers are at your home, you are still getting a second-rate experience when compared to the movie theater. Most modern movie theaters are equipped with state-of-the-art projectors and surround sound systems. Even when going to a standard showing, you are still watching the movie in the highest quality available and with an audio mix that is optimized for movie t

A Selection of My Favorite Video Games of the 2010's

Image
I had so much fun writing about my top movie of the decade, so I wanted to continue the series about my favorite video games. For as much as I love movies, video games hold an even closer place in my heart. There have been so many great stories and experiences in the world of video games over the last decade, and I want to share a few of my favorites with you. The Last of Us Before the game even came out, I knew it was going to be great. It was being made by Naughty Dog, the studio that had been on fire with the Uncharted series. When the game came out, however, it blew away even the highest of expectation. It was getting perfect scores from every review publication. Everyone on my PS3 friends list was playing it upon release. I couldn’t wait to give it a try for myself. Since I was still in high school, I waited until Black Friday to pick it up for $20. During that Christmas break, I experienced one of the best video games I have ever played. The story is a s

My Favorite Eagles Moments

Image
This year marks the beginning of another playoff run for my favorite NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles. It has been a very up and down season for the Eagles with injuries plaguing the team all year. In the end, they were able to overcome the obstacles, win the NFC East, and secure a first-round match-up with the Seattle Seahawks. However, I’m not here to write about that today. Instead, I’m here to reflect on seasons past. Whenever the Eagles are about to start a playoff run, I tend to think back on some of my favorite Eagles teams, players, and moments. To get everyone in the spirit, I wanted to share some of my favorite moments with you. The 2017 Season Okay, I figured I’d get this one out of the way first since it is the most obvious inclusion to this post. After years of let downs and heart-breaking finishes, the Eagles were finally able to win the Super Bowl! It took the most unorthodox path to get there, but it finally happened.  It wasn’t until Jake Elliot

New Year’s Eve: An Annual Manzo Tradition

Image
For many, New Year’s Eve is a holiday that is planned on a whim and without much importance. For me, planning has been simple: party at my place! My family has hosted a party on New Years Eve for as long as I can remember. In my family, we usually rotate the holidays between the different households, and New Year’s was always our holiday.   When I was younger, it had a place along with my birthday and Christmas as one of my most anticipated days of the year. It was time where my entire family (most notably my cousins) would finally come to my house to play. I would see my family all the time (and still do for better or worse ,love you guys! 😘), but we’re usually in Ambler at any of my other family members' places since that is where most of my family is centralized. Our New Year’s Eve party was the exception to the rule and I would spend the entire day waiting in anticipation. Frankly, I still do. Before the party start, the entire day is spent getting prepared

My Favorite Movies of the 2010’s

The end of the year is always a time for reflection, but this year especially with it being the end of the decade. While time always seems to go by quickly, thinking about the entire decade really puts into perspective just how much has happened. I thought that a fun way to celebrate the end of the decade would be to think back and reflect on some of my favorite pieces of pop culture from this past decade. To start, I’m going to think back on some of my favorite movies from this decade.   With the majority of my teenage years being in the 2010’s, many of these films have left a large impression on me and will continue to stay with me as I move forward into the next decade and beyond.   In no particular order, here are some of my favorites: John Wick Franchise I’m one movie in to my list and I’m already cheating . I hope you understand though as all three of the John Wick movies have been fantastic! All three movies feature some of the best and most well-choreograp
